Junior Leaders

The 10-month program is designed for high school juniors blending students from diverse academic and socio-economic backgrounds. Program topics include: Breaking Down School/County Barriers; economics -- planning/ zoning/financial issues faced by entrepreneurs; community history and cultural awareness; students Showcasing Their Community; private meetings with local & state government in Jefferson City and Topeka, Kansas; Truman Library White House Decision Making Center; community service agency visits; introduction to the media; understanding the law--a judge presides over a case presented by students; and students making a difference through community service projects

Established in 1993 for students attending Wyandotte County schools, the program through the generous support of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, expanded in 2002 into Jackson and Johnson Counties. Their support also allowed implementation of the 5-month Senior Leaders Program for high school seniors who successfully complete the Junior Leaders program. In October 2003, the program became a separate organization and was granted its own 501(3) status on November 4, 2003. For 2004-2005, there are 152 students participating in the 20/20 Leadership program
